I used to love sitting in with Doug Riley on organ as he played gospel piano. This is my humble tribute to Doug, with me on both the “Cherry” and the “Ebony”. I learned a tremendous amount playing with Doc throughout the years. Sometimes it was him on piano and me on organ….sometimes the other way around. I was 25 when I first started to play for him on sessions, and it was a real eye opener. I had never played with anyone who had such a complete grasp of different styles. Rock, gospel, classical, New Orleans, stride…you name it. He played on a film score for me in 1999, and had a stride solo in the middle of a cue. It was the only time I ever saw an entire orchestra applaud someone on the recording studio floor after a take.
